CINCO CIUDADES SERVICE PROJECTS:

Holiday Baskets for Families:  Each year we support needy families with wrapped gifts, clothing and grocery gift certificates.  Recent recipients have been families identified via C.A.S.A (Court Appointed Special Advocates), Family Care Network families and the DeGroot Home, among others.  This is a rewarding process from beginning to end but the most gratifying moments come when delivering the items to the pleasantly surprised and grateful families.

High School and College Scholarships:  Every year, our vocational committee selects worthy recipients from local high schools and junior colleges to receive cash scholarships.  These scholarships are critical in helping the young people in our community to realize their hopes and dreams.

Fort Hope:  Fort Hope is a Western-style fort, with hands-on activities, geared towards reaching and mentoring children in need.  Over the past several years we have helped Fort Hope in several ways, to include sponsoring field trips and funding the purchase of a cow, which will financially benefit Fort Hope for years to come.

Make a Difference Day:  Our efforts for Make a Difference Day often focus on literacy.  Most recently we hosted a “Teddy Bear Tea” at the Oceano Library for first and second graders.  The tea included story time and each child received a teddy bear book bag filled with books, a teddy bear and other fun items.  We also hosted a story time at the Arroyo Grande library in conjunction with this event.

Project Education (Oceano Library):  Our club was vital to the establishment of the Oceano Library.  As part of our on-going commitment to the success of the library we contribute 10% of our fundraising proceeds to the library annually.

5Cities Homeless Coalition Empty Bowls:  For the second year in a row we supported this worthwhile event organized by the coalition which is attempting to build a service center for the homeless with the funds raised.  We provide bowls and partner with the Oceano Library to have children decorate and glaze bowls in preparation for firing. We also work with Arroyo Grande High Schools students in glazing the bowls as well.  Bowls created from these two workshops are used at the Empty Bowls event held most recently on the 25th of September 2013.  Attendees at the event will enjoy a meal of soup and bread donated by the region’s best chefs served in one of the homemade bowls created by the children, students and local artists.  As an added bonus all attendees get to keep their one-of-a kind keepsake bowl.

CINCO CIUDADES FUNDRAISERS:

Tee-Off With Altrusa annual golf tournament:  Held for 21 years at various local golf courses, this is one of our major fundraisers.  The money raised goes to benefit and support all of our club projects.  The 22nd Annual tournament will be held in April 2014.

Celebration of Trees:  This event has been held annually for the past 5 years and continues to grow in popularity every year.  Initially held in conjunction with the Arroyo Grande “Elegant Evening in the Village”.  The Celebration of Trees expanded to become a stand-alone event held at the Victorian Pitkin-Conrow Estate for several years.  This year we are once again are growing our event by hosting it at the Arroyo Grande Regional Center.  Each year local businesses and individuals sponsor trees by fully decorating and supplying the gifts beneath the tree.  The total value for each decorated tree with gifts is at least $300.  Tickets are sold and participants place tickets in the buckets of trees they hope to win.  This year, the event will include a fully catered dinner as well.

Mystery Dinner – Held for several years at the Pitkin-Conrow Victorian House, this is wonderful club fundraiser.  Each year, a different mystery unfolds, with the guests participating to identify the murderer.  Dinner and wine are served and a good time is always had by all.  This year’s event will be held on 22 February 2014.

The Altrusa Cookbook – This cookbook was compiled using recipes donated by Altrusans throughout District Eleven.  Each cookbook sells for $10 and members often bring samples of the completed entries to meetings or events.  They are always delicious.
