Club News

About our Club: The club was chartered in May 1978. It serves residents in all West Valley communities. In 2015 we initiated the formation of ReadOn Arizona Greater Surprise.  Numerous community partners have signed on to form the coalition, including two school districts, First Things First, and other service providers in the community. The group will be providing educational opportunities to children ages 0 – 8 and their parents. The goal is to have as many children as possible reading at grade level by the time they leave the third grade, a critical age in the educational development of a child. This is a very exciting project for us and we are proud to be the “founders.”

Other West Valley service projects include: 1) covering the cost for H.S.E. (High School Equivalence) testing for students completing the program at Rio Salado Community College in Surprise. In collaboration with Rio Salado, we host a reception for the students, and their family members. Thanks to our partnership with Friends of the Surprise Libraries, (www.friendsofthesurpriselibraries.org)  we have received 4 grants in the last 5 years to provide reimbursement to the students for the H.S.E test and give each recipient a certificate during a special meeting in May each year. 2) Ongoing collection and donations of hundreds of books every year. 3) Honoring eighth grade students in Title I schools in the Peoria Unified School District with “Altruism Awards” which include a gift card to Barnes and Noble bookstores and a personalized Certificate of Achievement. Recipients are chosen by the teachers and given out by Altrusans at the 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony. 4) Collecting cereal at each meeting to donate to a local food bank in addition to our financial contribution each year.

Each year we explore new opportunities for service in our community. For the past 2 years we have provided PJs for the children of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren. Last year we started providing scholarships for middle school girls to attend summer S.T.E.M. Camp at ASU. We also began reading to classrooms at a local elementary school. The principal suggests a theme. We purchase age appropriate books for Pre-K through Grade 6. After reading to the classes, we donate the books to the classrooms.

Our new international project is to support the What If? Foundation with funds to provide scholarships for 3 elementary girls to attend the new Father Jeri School in the Ti Plas Kazo community in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
